Hi Chelsea
The first thing is not to panic and think it is the end of the world. This will only give you a negative view on your future and prospects.

What happens with eating disorders is they turn into an (OCD) obsessive compulsive disorder based on food. This is because every time you binge and purge you release a feel good chemical in the brain. This does not last long so you start to repeat the cycle again and again.

As you continue you start to build new neuronal pathways in your brain these start to fire in the same way every time you binge and purge, you simply become obsessed with the act.

It then becomes a compulsion as you cannot consciously stop even if you want to and now you have a disorder.

What you must now do is start to resist the urges, every time you want to start binging walk away and go do something else: anything you enjoy doing as long as food is not involved.

Is it easy at first to do? Certainly not. It will take all your will power at first and you will give in a lot at the start. But as you resist you will find you will start to succeed and the more you do the stronger you will become.

Just remember: It is my OCD it is not me. Keep telling yourself that and it will help.

I have a new book soon to be released called:
Cure Your Eating Disorder: 5 Step Program to Change your Brain.
The Neuroplasticity Approach

This book explains everything about why and how you have the problem and a total treatment program to follow to beat it.

All the best
Dr Irina

I had a baby last year and before i got pregnant i weighed 124 and i gained 85 pounds while i was pregnant. after the baby i weigh 190 but i feel like i'm hopeless. so three months ago i started throwing my food up. its become an addiction. everything i eat has to come right back up otherwise i hate myself. i didn't throw up at school today cause i didn't have my toothbrush so when i got home i went straight to the bathroom. I still feel worthless though.

You have hit the nail on the head with this statement. I am a male getting through this disorder and there are so many young men overcoming this or going through this like myself. All you have to do is look around you, there are many thin guys out there and I know they are suffering and scrificing so much to be the way they are....sacrificing including their future.

Only a little whie ago I suffered a cardiac arrest due to my eating disorders and excessive excersize. If anyone reading this is suffering from anorexia, if you wish to live, do not do this to yourself. You are eating up your muscles, including your heart muscles, and you will die...I did and by some miracle I made it.

Thanks.

Comment on Eating Disorders are the Reverse Side of the Child Obesity Campaign by Farrah Brittany Aldjufrie

I admire your unique and innovative perspective as to how children come to experience full-blown eating disorders later in life. In fact, in researching childhood eating disorders and risks, I continue to find the repetitively obvious and common discourse associated with the subject: that eating problems arise from family problems and the media, among various other sociocultural, biological, and behavioral perspectives. While these standpoints are legitimate and have been studied for years, it is refreshing to see a new take on the issue at hand.

Firstly, I think you raise a very important point in shedding light on the fact that programs designed to promote health and to combat obesity may sometimes backfire. New Guidelines for Childhood Obesity Prevention Programs on the Academy for Eating Disorders have been recently posted and discuss that a mere “emphasis on appearance and weight control can promote eating disordered behaviors.” By stressing weight and healthy eating, children begin to think more about such issues and in consequence, may start diet clubs and embark on unhealthy journeys towards losing weight. With the focus centered on being skinny, those children that are overweight tend to stand out even more so than before in contrast. Additionally, other factors like the media only serve to exacerbate the problem.

Secondly, I agree with your idea that the pessimistic attitudes that overweight children acquire throughout their childhood can lead to full blown eating disorders later on. This is especially true since these negative schemas are formed when the child’s brain is most “plastic.” The idea is that while children’s development system are still malleable to change, they will acquire negative views towards food and the self, which will then become molded into their brains as they become adults. You note that there have been major breakthroughs in the treatment of eating disorders via “neuroplasticity”, “using the fact that our brains remain plastic even into adulthood.” This idea appears to be a pioneering approach to the treatment of eating disorders, and I am very interested to see its development. You are honest in candidly noting that treatment is difficult and not meant for everyone. However, your argument would be more convincing if you implemented sufficient data and/or empirical research in your discussion of neuroplasticity. Your readers would gain a lot by knowing the facts, how many people this type of treatment has worked for, and the scientific and psychological implications. It would only benefit you to include more evidence. Nevertheless, I applaud your intuitive and modern approach to a historically old problem.
